13. Difference between HTML Templates and WordPress Themes

These days we have so many options for building a website that it’s naturally to get lost in these web jungles, especially if you are a beginner or a newcomer. Today’s post is addressed for all who are misunderstanding HTML with WordPress and need to know the clear difference between these two terms. We will shed some light on this issue and help you to choose which option is right for you.

Here is the list of the main distinctive features between WordPress and HTML:

1. The main definition

WordPress is a free CMS (Content Management System) which allows you to build a website or blog based on its structure. WordPress is using a template-based format, so you can easy set a ready-made theme and add your content by using drag and drop features. In the previous blog entry, we were considering the most frequently asked questions by WordPress beginners to help you figure out the basic features of this publishing platform.

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language, in other words it is a programming code which allows you to display information on a page. You need to use HTML tags to format different parts of the document (headings, paragraphs, images, etc.). But before working with HTML, you must learn how to edit HTML code. It’s not very complicated, but still you need to know how to do it. Otherwise, you can create HTML pages using Dreamweaver platform or any other HTML editor. The easiest way to work with HTML is getting a ready-made template and just make some light customization tweaks to set your original content.

2. Practical usage

WordPress is used by millions of people as the platform for websites’ running and blogging activity, perfectly serving both types of the websites.

HTML is used mostly for various websites, providing great capabilities either for business, personal or creative web projects.

3. Source

WordPress is an open source platform which is developed by community. It means that anybody can modify this CMS by developing various additions (plugins, themes) which you can implement into your own site.

As for HTML, it is a closed source, meaning only you or coder can make any necessary changes to the code.

4. Theme or template

Only WordPress files are called themes and can be managed through the WordPress admin panel. A theme consists of the pages, they are stored in a single database and linked together, so you can make any style changes with just a few simple clicks.

Design which is based on HTML technology is called template and it can be edited in any HTML editor. HTML template can not be installed in a WordPress site as it doesn’t have WP Content Management System in its structure.

5. Software requirements

Before purchasing any design for your future website, please pay attention to the software requirements. For example, in our site you can see all necessary information on the right of the template, near the Live demo. In this way you can check if the presented design is running on WordPress or HTML.

6. Limitations in design

Speaking about design opportunities, WordPress includes modules which can be used in specific places on a page. You have a lot of opportunities to implement your creative ideas, but still you need to follow this structure for making the right customization.

Working with HTML, website’s design is limited only by your imagination and the level of your programming skills.

7. Updates

If you want to make the updates yourself, with WordPress you need to log in and make text or image updates easily.

As for HTML site, you need to use HTML editor to make any updates. If you are using another computer, the required editor must be downloaded, so you can do all necessary modifications in your site.

8. Frequency of updates

If you need to do updates constantly, being able to add fresh content into your database, then WordPress option will suit for the best.

But if you are planning to update your website just a few times a year, it makes sense to go with HTML version.

9. SEO

SEO-friendly WordPress site requires the appropriate page structure as well as using some SEO plugins to maximize natural search exposure.

Dealing with HTML, you need to pay attention to the page construction and tags during construction, so your website will be SEO-optimized.

10. Flexible layout

This valuable feature can be built either in WordPress theme or HTML template. In this way, Responsive WordPress theme can be adjusted to any screen resolution, providing you and your visitors with the great user experience.

Some HTML templates have responsive layout in their structure, but you need to check this option in the list of the features or just test it on your mobile phone. Most of HTML templates which comes with responsive layout are called Bootstrap templates.

As for OceanThemes, we can offer you our constantly growing collections of WordpPress Themes with responsive layout, Bootstrap Templates which have Bootstrap framework in their structure to make your website adaptive for any device and also HTML Templates with quality designs and great capabilities.

A common issue that can occur when installing a WordPress themes is “The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet.” error message being displayed when uploading or activating the theme.

Way 1: Upload the theme via WordPress admin panel

Way 2: Upload the theme via FTP

17. Hosting Requirements to running WordPress Theme.

To run WordPress we recommend your host supports:

Please make sure  that you are running version WordPress 4.9.x or higher version, version PHP 5.6 or higher version and version MySQL 5.6 or higher  version(for legal environments also needing versions  PHP 5.6 will work well, but it is recommended to be on at least version PHP 5.7). We have tested it with  many OSs such as MAC, Windows and Linux... Below is a list of items you should ensure that your host can comply with them.

Hosting is more secure when PHP applications, like WordPress which is runing use your account’s username instead of the server’s default shared username (www or www-data). The most common way for hosting companies to do this is use suPHP. Just ask your potential host if they run suPHP or something similar.

Ask for it

Here’s a letter you can send to your hosting provider; copy and paste!

I'm interested in running the open-source WordPress <https:""></https:> web software and I was wondering if my account supported the following:
PHP 7 or greater
MySQL 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB 10.0 or greater
The mod_rewrite Apache module

Recommended PHP Configuration Limits:

There are many issues you may run into such as white screen, demo content fails when importing, empty page content with Visual Composer and other similar issues are all related to low PHP configuration limits. The solution is given to increase the PHP limits. You can do this on your own, or contact your web hosting and ask them to increase those limits to a minimum need as follows

18. How to Enable WPBakery Page Builder (Formerly Visual Composer) on All Post Types

By default, WPBakery Page Builder (Formerly Visual Composer) may not be pre-configured or setup by your theme to allow Visual Composer layout editor to be used on all post types such as Products or Posts, Portfolio, Service, etc.... You can change this using the WPBakery Page Builder (Formerly Visual Composer) Role Manager:

1, Setup WPBakery Page Builder (Formerly Visual Composer)  for custom post type : portfolio, service, product, etc...

  1. From your WordPress admin, click WPBakery Page Builder
  2. Click the Role Manager tab
  3. From the Post Types drop-down, choose Custom, then check each of the boxes available and click Save Changes button

19. Translate the WordPress Theme use the Loco Translate Plugin !!!

Hi Everyone,

Please watch video tutorial, how to use the Loco Translate to translate your theme in your language:

Best regards,

OceanThemes Team !

20. What To Do If Demo Content Import Fails

If the import stalls and fails to respond after a few minutes, or it fails with a simple error message like “Import failed,” You are suffering from PHP configuration limits that are set too low to complete the process. You should contact your web host and ask them to increase those limits to a minimum as follows:

You can verify your PHP configuration limits by installing a simple plugin found here. And you can also check your PHP error logs to see the exact error being returned.

Also if possible update your PHP version to 5.5

After doing this you can reset your database using the WordPress Database Reset Plugin and try to re-import the demo data ( WARNING : Reset the database will make you lost all the data of your current wordpress )

If you still have problem your web host may uses process watching software that prevents bulk processing on their web servers.

If you have problem please submit a ticket and we will help you to import the demo.

21. Adding Translation Files To Your Child Theme !

If you worked hard to translate the theme you probably don’t want to keep the translated .po and .mo files in the parent theme because they will be overwritten when you update the theme. The best solution would be to place them in your child theme which is very easy to do and is also explained right in the WordPress CODEX.

So basically you just have to add your languages into your child theme and then use (add to your child theme’s functions.php) the following function to load it from the child theme instead of the parent:

// Load translation files from your child theme instead of the parent theme
function my_child_theme_locale() {
    load_child_theme_textdomain( 'total', get_stylesheet_directory() . '/languages' );
add_action( 'after_setup_theme', 'my_child_theme_locale' );

Then add your translated files inside a "languages" folder in the child theme.

22. Support Policy

support policy

Thank you for purchasing one of our premium themes. We only offer support only to our Theme Buyers with a Valid Purchase Code. We only offer support for our themes, features and functionality unique to our themes. Please note that we cannot assist with general WordPress support or provide you with theme modifications and customizations in any circumstances. If you need any customization service you may request a quote from us.

What we support

The item support period

A supported item includes item support for 6 months from the purchase date. During those 6 months, the author is expected to be available to provide the item support services we’ve set out on this page. Response times by authors can vary depending on the volume of inquiries, the nature of the request, and whether questions have already been answered or support has already been provided (see ‘fair-use’ later on).

If you’re about to purchase the item, you’ll have the option to purchase extended item support, increasing the item support period up to a maximum of 12 months from the date of purchase.

Answering questions about how to use the item

During the item support period, the author is expected to be available to answer your general questions about the item and how to use it. For example, how do I get my homepage to look like the one in the preview? The response to this type of question can come in various formats including directing you to an already documented response (e.g. in the comments or FAQs).

Answering technical questions about the item (and included third party assets)

During the item support period the author is expected to be available to:

Help with defects in the item or included third party assets

During the item support period, you can report and discuss bugs and minor item defects with the author, and authors are expected to be available to assist you with reported bugs. If appropriate, authors may issue bug fixes directly to you as part of item support. (If an author decides to address a bug fix through a general version update, that update will be available to all buyers.)

A supported item may include third party functionality or items from other authors such as plugins, image sliders or contact forms. During the item support period, the author is expected to be available to assist with questions about third party assets, and to either help you to address particular issues with the third party asset or direct you to where you can find the solution.

Item updates to ensure ongoing compatibility and to resolve security vulnerabilities

If a supported item includes a third party asset (e.g., a plugin), or is intended to work with third party software or platforms (e.g. a CMS), authors are expected to ensure the item remains compatible if the software or platform version is updated. This includes if the third party asset has a security update. Item updates of this type will generally be delivered as version updates available to all buyers. Choosing a supported item (or upgrading to extended support) ensures you’re getting an item that’s backed by the author, and enables our authors to maintain their items in these ways.

What we don’t support

Our support is NOT applicable to the following queries:

item customization

Item support does not include services to modify or extend the item beyond the original features, style and functionality described on the item page. For customization services that will help you tailor the item to your specific requirements, we recommend contacting the author to see if they privately offer paid customisation services or checking out the great service providers on Envato Studio.

Installation of the item

Buyers have varying levels of experience with different software platforms and technologies and getting your item up and running can depend on many variables that are specific to your circumstances. You’ll need to have a working knowledge of the software platforms and technologies for which items are created, so item support does not include help to install the item on your server or on a CMS. If you’re just starting out or skilling up, try a course or tutorial on Tuts+. If you’re after installation services, you can ask the authors if they privately offer paid installation services or you can check out service providers on Envato Studio.

Hosting, server environment, or software

Authors are not required to support issues about your web hosting or server environment, or issues with the software you’ve got installed on your machine to use the item. Please check your ISP/web hosting provider or other software documentation that you’re trying to use to help solve your issues.

Help from authors of included third party assets

If a supported item includes a third party asset (e.g. a plugin or slider), the author of the third party asset is not required to provide support for that asset to buyers of the supported item. Direct your questions about third party assets to the author of the item you purchased.

Support Guidelines

Please follow the guidelines mentioned below while using our Support Forum:

23. Increase the PHP Time Limit

The PHP Time Limit refers to the amount of time (in seconds) that your site will spend on a single operation before timing out (to avoid server lockups). To prevent the importing process from timing out, the value needs to be increased. 300 (seconds) should be enough for processing the import file.

(Beginner) Ask your hosting company to increase it

The easiest way is to reach out to your hosting company and ask them to increase the max_execution_time to 300.

(Advanced) Increase the Max Execution Time via php.ini

Connect to your server via FTP and find or create the php.ini file. The following line must be added to it:

max_execution_time = 300;

(Advanced) Increase the Max Execution Time via .htaccess

Connect to your server via FTP and find the .htaccess file and add the following line:

php_value max_execution_time 300
